. PRODUCT DESIGN AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

DESCRIPTION

Obesity is a serious health problem in the Western world. Significant health risks are associated with obesity and the number of obese is high and rising.

Our obesogenic environment encourages food consumption, discourages physical activity and is believed to represent the root cause of weight gain. Energy balance is disturbed and has to be restored.

Product design and products thereof usually emphasize on offering comfort and ease in use to potential users, therefore relieving users from effort and restrain activity. Active alternatives, for instance walking or taking the stairs, are often available but are not chosen: the problem is also a state-of-mind and behavioural.

Behaviour can be influenced by both mindset and an activity encouraging environment. In this industrial design research, a clear vision has been developed on how products can change behaviour. A model and software tool will introduce and clarify this vision in conjunction with positive product aspects and behavioural characteristics. Six concepts will illustrate this vision and direct the focus on restoring energy balance and the creation of a positive outlook of life.

This industrial design project concerns itself by converting abstract information into realistic product design concepts. Furthermore, it entails research based information and analyses in physiological and psychological aspects of overweight and physical activity.
